Leipzig Christmas Market

Leipzig Christmas Market (Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt)

The Leipzig Christmas Market is one of Germany’s oldest and most picturesque, renowned for its rich traditions, musical heritage, and vibrant atmosphere. Held in the heart of the city, the market seamlessly blends medieval charm with Leipzig’s status as a cultural hub, drawing visitors with its enchanting decorations, local crafts, and seasonal delicacies. The Leipzig Christmas Market dates back to 1458, making it one of the oldest continuous Christmas markets in Germany. Leipzig’s historical role as a major trade and cultural center in Saxony contributed to the market’s early prominence.

In my opinion, the Christmas markets in Saxony are some of the best in Germany, if not the world. Leipzig celebrates Saxony’s rich artisanal heritage, showcasing wooden nutcrackers, pyramids, and candle arches from the nearby Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). Today, Leipzig’s Christmas Market retains its historic layout and traditions while incorporating modern attractions.

Layout and Areas

The Leipzig Christmas market is largely one big connected market. Here are some of the areas:

  • Marktplatz (Market Square): The heart of the market, framed by the Old Town Hall, featuring the giant Christmas tree and main stage.

  • Nikolaistraße and Augustusplatz: Stalls extend down these streets, connecting different market sections.

  • Naschmarkt: A smaller, more intimate section focusing on crafts and gourmet food, near the Old Stock Exchange.

  • Augustusplatz Ferris Wheel: A highlight offering panoramic views of Leipzig’s festive skyline.

  • The Medieval Market (Mittelaltermarkt)

    • A medieval-themed section near Naschmarkt, where costumed vendors, blacksmiths, and musicians recreate the ambiance of a Renaissance fair (had the best Langos of my life in this market!). Visitors can experience old-world crafts, mulled wine in clay mugs, and roasted meats over open flames.

Culinary Delights

Leipzig’s market features regional and Saxon specialties:

  • Leipziger Lerche: A shortcrust pastry filled with marzipan and jam, originally made to replace the local lark bird delicacy.

  • Grünkohl mit Knackwurst: Hearty kale with sausage, a Saxon winter staple.

  • Kartoffelpuffer: Potato pancakes served with applesauce.

  • Stollen: Dresden’s famous fruit bread, widely available in Leipzig’s market.

  • Feuerzangenbowle: A fiery mulled wine prepared with rum-soaked sugar loaves ignited over the drink.

  • Dresden Handbrot: A freshly baked bread pocket, filled with melted cheese and smoky ham or mushrooms, and topped with sour cream and chives. A specialty from Dresden (another Saxon city), but you can also find it at the Leipzig markets

  • (You can also find Dutch poffertjes at this market)

Uniqueness of the Leipzig Christmas Market

  • Largest Free-Standing Advent Calendar: The façade of Leipzig’s Old Town Hall transforms into an Advent calendar, with new windows opened daily.

  • Saxon Nostalgia: Leipzig’s market preserves centuries-old Saxon customs and local legends, creating an authentic holiday atmosphere.

  • Historic Atmosphere: The backdrop of the Old Town Hall and St. Nicholas Church enhances the market’s historical feel.

  • Authentic Saxon Experience: A chance to immerse in regional customs, flavors, and craftsmanship.
